Voters in 49 of 50 states gave the hugely popular President Ronald Reagan -- and Vice President Bush - the stamp of approval to continue his policies for four more years

Reagan's Democratic opposition, Walter Mondale, ran a lackluster campaign sparked only with the innovation of including Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate. That turned foul when she came under attack because her husband was charged with financial impropriety. Mondale won only Washington D.C. and his homestate of Minnesota.

The surprise of the election: the number of young people, 18-24, who voted for the 73-year-old Reagan, the nation's oldest sitting President.
